I wonder if it is already time to say Farewell to one of the greatest current photographers, Daido Moriyama an artist who has influenced many. He is now in his eighties, still working, still restless, and the question remains. The exhibition at the Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson, titled Love Letters to Photography, was my ninth encounter with his work, and yet not the most powerful. Not so much because the work feels familiar by now, but more because of the way it was displayed and the selection that was made. Something felt slightly off to me, as though the exhibition did not quite do justice to the depth of what he has produced over a lifetime. Having said that, it was a genuine pleasure to stand once again in front of his deep blacks and whites, his blurred and grainy images, his very particular vision of Japanese life. There is something in those photographs that is appealing to me. And as always, leaving the space, I felt the same desire rising: to visit Japan once more.
